CHIRIBAYA
Chiribaya Model
Chiribaya culture (A.D. 1000-1350), known as “The Lords of the Desert”, had their origin and development in Ilo (southern coast of Perú), in Algarrobal’s Valley, stretching as far north as Tambo’s Valley and as far south as the Tacna-Arica axis. Upon arriving to Moquegua they settled in Yaral, and shared the higher parts of the valley with the “Tiawanakus”. It was a culture of farmers, goldsmiths, weavers, fishermen and potters. Their goddess of Providence, in the form of a corncob carrying her two children, has been recreated by the Peruvian plastic artist Alonso de la Fuente (exclusively for Biondi).
